’QUAKE AT SEA
LINER SHAKEN.

When the steamer Northumberland was 270 miles front Auckland at 8.37 , o’ciopk; last Sunday night, distinct icarthqiialke tremors were experienced - for i seconds. They apparently were caused by a movement on the sea bed, and the ship vibrated from stem to stern. .. A radio inquiry of the steamer Mahia, then 180 miles south of the Northumberland, elicited the information that nothing unusual was noticed. LAST WEEK’S SHAKE AT WELLINGTON. FIRST IMPULSE “VERY SHARP” The official time of Thursday s earthquake in AV oiling ton was fifty - four seconds past one o’clock. The first impulse was. very sharp, and on tho Rossi-Forcl scale-the force of Lhe earthquake is estimated by the seismologists at. the Dominion Obsorvatory to have been 4 (10 being the maximum strength of shocks whon greater destruction is wrought). Tho origin of tlio earthquake is estimated to have boon within 25 miles of Wellington, but in which direction cannot bo told with certainty until further records from recording machines elsewhere are received. The tiltoinetcr showed that the ground was definitely tilted to the south.
