FERTILE EGGS
SUCCESSFUL IMPORTATION FROM ENGLAND.
STRATFORD, May IS. Understood to be the first occasion tlia/t lien’s eggs for hatching in New Zealand have been successfully imported from England, an experiment made.by Messrs J. and S. Clolre (Lepperton) and explained to Taranaki pig breeders, at Stratford, .aroused keen interest and opened up speculation as to whether tlie attempt could be repeated on a larger scale.
Mr J. Cloke sojd the eggs were of a breed known as Weisomers, developed tin .Holland four years ago and now very popular in England on account of- the large size of their chocolatecoloured eggs. ' Ilis son, Mr S. CJloke, ',/ho was interested in poultry, t, arranged for three sittings of. eggs to he sent out by ship under personal supervision of tlie .'chief steward, who watched carefully.' tb© temperatures', of :t'b'© tlirco sittings, two of which were;k§pt at 54 degrees, and one ait 44 ' degrees. Only -.one chick survived, hut the experiment showed that the .importation and hatching of eggs' could be .accomplished. . ■
