SOCCER

N.Z. v. N.S.W

OPENING MATCH PLAYED IN RAIN TOUPvISTS DEFEATED (Ii.P.A. .by Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received May 21, 5.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 21.

The Cricket Ground was very sodden for tlie soccer -match between New Zealand and Now South Wales this afternoon, and rain’fell throughout the match, but the New Zealannders’ stocks rose on that account.

Thd captain, Christie, said: “This is just what we iivantod. In Auckland it rains nearly every week-end, and wd. soccer lads become so accustomed tlo a greasy ball that -a dry one would almost- seem foreign ito us.”

Hie teams were as follows:

New South Wales: McNahb, Evans, Parkes, O’Connnor, Tennant, Osborne Crowhurst, Cameron, Smith, Hughes, Sym.

New Zealand: Zuill. Stone, Gerrard Chapman, Christie, Graham, Barton, Blackie, Baker, Kershaw and May. Tlie referee was Mr D. Quinn. The sodden turf made fast play impossible.

New South* Wales, adapting themselves to the conditions, won easily by five goals to nil. Tlie New Zealand forwards ' failed in combined play, the inside men not tackling the backs. Christie'played a fine game at centre half, continually feeding the New Zealand! forwards, particularly -the right winger, who broke through, but was repeatedly stopped by the New South I Vales goalie. The other visiting halves failed in attack and defence.

The New South Wales players tricked 1 them frequently, Crowhurst leaving the team standing. New Zealand rallied in the last to" minutes, but their efforts were futile even Kershaw failing with a, penalty kick in the last five minutes.

Tlie scorers for New South Wales wero Cameron (2), Smith, Hughes, and Crowhurst.

Christie, Gerrard and Zuill were the best of the tourists. The attendance was 2000.
