OUR READERS’ OPINIONS

X.Z. TRADE WITH RUSSIA

(To tlio Editor.)

Sir, —There has been a certain am-

ount of eontroversv in-the--past regarding the volume of trade between Russia and New Zealand and. in fairness to Russia, we must point out that the figures so far quoted do not include that country’s purchases of wool from ’New Zealand. During too tw G seasons. 1928-29 and 1929-30. bought for Russia 6559 bales of wool, of a total value of £140.-579 19s 9m and we have reason to believe thatbusiness i s likely to be renewed m the near future. The control of nil our purchases lay in Moscow, hut for some reason, probably convenience in transport; the wools wore shipper from here to Bremen, and this n 0 doubt accounts for tlio fact that t‘ ! " business has not been officially recognised as Russian. IVe must oddfurther, that the financial arrangements were entirely to our satisfaction. and wore not- hampered by any irksome restrictions. This country, like all others, needs competition, and when Russia again purchases wool m New Zealand it will certainly improve prices over the classes of wool m which they are interested— mainly crossbreds and lialf-breds. In tho above-mentioned seasons, Russia bought many thousands of bales of all descriptions of wool in Australia through our branches there.—M e are, yours, etc.,
