Mr. A. G. Lancaster, for the past 10 veal's on the staff of the Gisborne Contral School, has received notice of his appointment as headmaster at Porangahau School, Hawke’s- Buy He was formerly at- Newton School,'Wellington, and came to Gisborne as second assistant, while he latterly wa s director of the Technical School Air. Lancaster, who takes over his new duties on July 1, has taken an active part in the social life of the town and was a leading member of tli e Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club and the Poverty Bay Golf Club. While congratulating him on his advancement, the many friends of Air. Lancaster will greatly -regret his departure from the town.

The high esteem in which the late Air. W. P. J. Long wag held, was shown by tlie large attendance atthe funeral at Alakaraka- Cemetery yesterday, the concourse numbering over 200, including large numbers of male aud female members of tho Oddfellows. lodges, members bi Turanganui Alasonie Lodge,, and returned soldiers. The last rites at' the graveside were conducted by tho Rev. F. I. Parsons, The Oddfellows funeral service was recited by Bro. Pi. Robb, and the Alasonie sendees, were read by Bros. E, Robertson, EHampton and A. Williamson, aud at ■the conclusion a hymn w-as sung. The deceased was a veteran of the Great War, and Air. H. Murphy of the Regimental Band sounded the Last Post, concluding an impressive service.

Sympathetic reference to the deaths of Messrs. G. IV. Humphreys, W. GMaclaurin and IV- H. Buswell were made at Saturday’s mooting of the Bovea-ty Bay branch of the Farmers’ Union. In moving votes of condolence with the bereaved relatives, the president, Mr. J. E. Benson, pointed out that Mr. Humphreys had been an active member of tho executive, and was one of our best farmers; it was a pleasure to visit his farm, ail'd his ability as a farmer was -reflected in tho property and in the stock. Sir. Maclaurin, added the president, was a gentleman with a charming personality. Mr. J. 0. Field referred to tho death of Mr. IV. H. Buswell, engineer of the Poverty Bay Power Board, who, tho speaker said, was a man with a beautiful nature and willing to help any young man desiring to progress; hi s personality made him an outstanding man in the Dominion and friends in the district deeply regretted their loss. During the past summer, the Gisborne and Poverty Bay rowing clubs weto again indebted to Mr. A. D Kirk for tho conveyance of regatta boats to out-of-town regatta courses. The debt wa s acknowledged, in the case of the Gisborne Rowing Club, at the half-yearly general meeting, vrheii Mr. Kirk’s sendees in this respect wore warmly commented upon .hy the club captain, Mr. G. H. Sceat s , aim otfior speakers.
