BASKETBALL

POVERTY BAY ACTIVITY. FUNDS ROLLING IN. HELP FROM ATI-ILETIO TEAM. Good progress is being made by the Poverty Bay Basketball Association in connection with the campaign to provide funds for the forthcoming Dominion tournament. The darice held by the association last week was a great success and a further considerable sum has been added to the tournament fund. Athletic A and B teams have topped the list for the teams’ share of the tournament fund, having raised and banded in £5 (£2 10s per team). In this they have not been, assisted by their parent athletic club, but have raised the amounts by social functions and small competitions.

These two teams have proved a distinct asset to the association. Always neat, well-behaved and good sports, they invariably help the association wilbngly—giving generously oven when their teams pet little benefit. Last year they did not begrudge their help, as sonic teams did. to finance the rep. side altliono-h their own club was not represented During the season they paid their own fares to Matawai to give the country girl s a pam c against a. town team. , , This year they wore very prominent among the workers at the dance and now they are the firsF teams to hand in their money towards Ihe tournament. close attention to practice It- is very pleasing to note that most of the teams are arranging early-morning practices. These are badly needed and should improve the game considerably if team members turn out regularly. Usually Die one or two who dodge practices are the ones most- in need of it; the practice is spoilt while the enthusiasts become disheartened. Perhaps this yeni, with several referees offering their services in the mornings, they will bo more successful than in Past seasons. ’ /

Another .referees’ meeting is to be held oil Monday night when the rules will he discussed, questions answered, and help given to new referees on points they have found difficult. COMPETITION GAMES. matches ON THURSDAY. The competitions were continued in bright sunshine on Thursday and Saturday, though a sharp v>>nJ ..n Thursday made conditions rather, chilly for spectators who failed to find sheltered corners. * Following are the results of Thurs. day’s games:— —A Grade. — > Cash Stores defeated! Huia, 1-1 11. H.S.O.G. defeated Athletic A, 8-5. Brownies defeated Athletic B, 18-10 Ex-Cash Stores d. Triangle A, 20-15 —B Grade. — All Blacks d. Triangle B, 14—0. Cash Stores' win from Iluia was more or less of a surprise, the latter. i;cam having shown better form °n the previous tw 0 weeks’ play. At half-time the score was 7—f> 111 fa * vonr of Huia, Cash Stores’, passing being very slow. However, m the second half, Cash Stores improved considerably and. the score ended m their favour by 3 goals. H.S.O.G. v. Athletic A provided

rather a disappointing game m the first half, play being very ragged on both sides. In the second half. H.S.O.G improved noticeably anc the passing became much quicker. Their opponents improved- likewise, but the score ended in favour °‘ H.S.O.G. ~ The most interesting match of n 0 afternoon was that between' Brownies and Athletic B. The latter team played excellently and J. Dixie . m the goal) scored almost _ every Dmo she held the hall in a suitable shooting position., while Rhoda Hewitson was most noticeable for her work on defence, jumping well arid keeping her opponent well guarded- I ™ Brownies had to play hard to heri Athletic B and it was only in th last ten minutes of fho game that the score began to mount m then favour. Of the new players m tins team Mrs J. Robertson was most worthy of mention, her defence ooing very sound. . Triangle fielded quite, a good sido against Ex-Cash Stores and the game was very even throughout. - Ex-Gash Stores’ victory was mainly due. to the very accurate shooting of Rose Plow-

man. ’ 1 ■ n There was only ono game m tlio B grade owing to the school holidays, All Blacks defeating Triangle B 14-0. The forme I .' team has quite a g° c style of play, but lacks consistency. The. Triangle B team has many beginners with, of course, little combination as yet, so that All Blacks had little difficulty in a win. v SATURDAY’S PLAY. Following are the results of Saturday’s game s:— —A Grade.— Tui defeated Celtic, 17—12 H.S.O.G. (Ay d; New Team, 13-11.

—B Grade. — H.S.O.G. 0B) d. Kiwi, o—s. The 'Tui-Celtic game was one of the fastest club matches seen in Gisborne and spectators enjoyed the snappy passing and good combined play of both sides. The game was very keenly contested and after tli’e first ten minutes, during which Tuis gained a lead of three goals, the teams seemed to get goal for goal until a run of three near the end gave Tuis victory. Celtic havo a splendid brio, of goal-throwers whose perfect handling of the hall and understanding of each other enabled them to break through'- the Tui defence which was about ns strong as any club defence could bo. Tins, however, was the strongest- part of the Celtic team, while Tuis were strong in every third—every girl doing her share to make for speed, combination and victory. H.S.O.G. (A) bad a very narrow win from the new team of A grade players which has been farmed to absorb extra girls wishing to play on Saturdays. Spectators were doliohted with the form shown hv these girls, who had never played together before. Combination was lacking, but. they made up for this in very sure catching, accurate passing and good l shooting. If they are- keen enough to practice rogulndv tViev he a distinct asset to the Saturday competition. H.S.O.G. (A) are cap. able of much better plav than the form they displayed On" Saturday, nneat several stages of the game it seemed as though the. new team would win. ,

The B grade match, H.S.O.G. IB) v. Kiwi, was quite even, hut uninteresting from the spectators point of view. Throwing was erratic ni ’d inaccurate on both sides, resulting in a more or less ragged game with only occasional patches of quick combined play. DRAW FOR TUTS WEEK. Following is the draw for this week’s games:— THURSDAY. —A Grade. — Huia v. H.5.0.G., No. 2 ground, 2 p.m. (.Miss McKinley). Ex-Cash Stores v. Athletic A, N°. 1 ground, 2.45 p.m. (Miss F. ’Wallace). Brownies v. Triangle, No. 2 ground at 2.45 (Mr. Ausoll). Cash Staves, a bye. Athletic B v. St, M.S.S. (A) to l* arranged after holidays. —B Grade.— (Second round.) Triangle v. Olympic, No. 1 ground, 2 p.m. (Mr. An«ell). Linesmen-. Messrs. Xoibeig ,iu 1 Sharpies. SATURDAY. —A Grade, — Celtic v. New Team, No. 2 ground, 2.5 p.m. (Miss C. Mead). H.S.O.G. (A) v. Tui, No. 2 ground, 2.50 p.m. (Miss L. Byrne). —B. Grade. — II S.O.G (B) v. Ormond, No. 1 ground, 2'p.m. (Mr. Wallace). ' Kiwi v. All Blacks, No. 1 ground, 245 p.m (Miss J. Dovery).
