Workmen making a- road on a hill above the Wuipa Valley, near Kawhia . discovered a fossilises shark s tooth in a Wck 1360 ft. above- sealevel. The fossil was. forwarded to the Auckland Museum, and in reporting on it the museum's palaeontologist writes: is .a very fin? specimen, and will be highly prized by us, as we have no other specimens Of this particular kind. The tooth belonged- to an extinct species of shark allied to the Indian grey shark’ and i s . known as - Notidanus dentatus Although fossil teeth of this species have been found m the chalk deposits of .England, the only known New Zealand specimens hitherto found have been from Amim Bluff, Marlborough. This particular shark, notidanus, lived and died iff cretaceous times , in any millions 0 years ago, and nothing exactly like it is now living.” ;) .
