GISBORNE ASSOCIATION. PAST YEAR REVIEWED. The annual report of the Gisborne. Boxing Association, far submission to the annual meeting this week, is as follows — > “The annual accounts disclose an excess of expenditure over income of £3 10s -id. This, is the third year in succession in which the association has shown a loss, the figures for tbe three years being £lO3 6s 3d, £lO5 10s, and £3 10s -Id. The position cannot be considered satisfactory. An association cannot carry on indefinitely with continued losses unless it has (reserves, and this °nr association has not. The time has now arrived at which The association, unless it can expect more support from tlie public, will be compelled regretfully to cease its operations. “That the association has been working on the right lines, in its effort to keep the game going locally l)T the presentation of .really goed ■ontests cannot be denied. It would be a great pity, now that we have such a number of really promising lads, if the game were to come to a standstill. Nevertheless, it- cannot he denied that ihe game has uni: been given the'support b.v the public that it deserves. This, unquestionably, is a result of the prevailing economic depression which the association has been trying to meet by very low prices, and even with those, support has been lacking.'’ The report then pays a warm tribute t 0 Mr. R. J. Iverridgo for assistance given m connection with the use of the Opera House for the three tournaments of the year. It was only due to a happy working arrangement with Mr. Kerridge that the association was able to emerge without, a considerably greater loss, it is stated, and the thanks of. the association are due .to him for the utmost courtesy and consideration during a time when sport is suffering everywhere. The activities of the- association during the past year included the organisation of two purely amateur carnivals, and one fixture at which the feature was a professional'match between W. Robertson and AY. Hogge, the pair meeting on l a' percentage basis. From the boxing point of view, the entertainment in all three instances was really good, it is. claimed with justification. At the New Zealand amateur championships, the association" was represented at New Plymouth by J. Franklin, S. Matchett and AV. McKay all three doing well in their classes though none was successful in bringing homo a title. The boxers were accompanied by Messrs. A. Heeney and F.\ Dominey as manager and trainer respectively, and / Mr. Heeney also represented the Gisborne association at the New Zealand conference, held concurrently with the annual championship tourney.. The small amount of money spent cn representation at the tourney and at the conference was well spent, tlie report states'. .. Thanks are expressed to the lion, medical officers, Rrs, Collins, Bp-wie, Muir and Rice; to the lion, auditor, Mr. C. 0. Hansen; to the Press, and to all who helped during the year to keep the game on its feet. Special mention is made of the assistance given by the- patron, Mr. AV. Lissant Clayton, and by Mr. George Clayton, a life member, whose interest is still unflagging. . As appeal is made to all interested in: keeping - the sport alive to attend the annual meeting on Wed nesday evening next,.
