GREYMOUTH, Jan. 25.

A large public meeting representing local bodies and unemployed was held in the Town Rail to-night to protest against the inadequacy of the relief allocation. The speakers includet the Mayors of Greymouth, Runanga, and Brunner, the chairman of the 'Oobden Town Board, and representatives of ,tho County, also of, the unemployed and Labor organisations. A resolution was proposed that the, meeting strongly protest against the inadequate relief; money, in this district urging the Board to make an immediate increase, also that the Miniser be asked to place Greymouth in the same category as the main centres for relief purposes as the cost ot living is far greater here than in the cities; also that the Minister be asked to review all schemes wit a view to removing the hardship the stand-down or short week, but this not to he done at the expensed the . other three weeks. An amendment, however,-was carried as follows : l “That, this meeting make a definHe request to tile Government at once , to cancel alt relief work and in lieu thereof pay sustenance as provided bp the Onemplojiaent Act.”
