DIGGING UP THE PAST
£50,000 TO PROVE BIBLE TRUE
British archaeologists will spend £50,000 this winter in digging up the past- (says the ‘'Sunday Express”). In Bible, lands—Palestine, Egypt, and Mesopotamia—at least- 12 major expeditions from Britain will be at work shortly. In addition there will he several smaller “digs,” as well as American, German, French, and Egyptian expeditions in the field. The most import-anat “dig” is that of Sir Flanders Petrie at Gaza, in South Palestine. Sir Flinders, who is in his 80th year, has left London on his 53rd archaeological expedition, and at Gaza he fwill seek the 6,000 years old temple of a city already old in the time of Abraham.
Dr Stephen Langdon, Professor of Assyriology in the University of Oxford, is again director of the OxfordField Museum expedition to Khsh—the ancient city in tho middle of the deserts of Irak, believed to be tbe oldest in the world. The Egyptian Exploration Society will have an expedition at ff'el el Amarna, in- Lower Egypt, - and probably two others at other sites. At Amarana .Mr J. D, S- Pendlebury, the Cambridge athJetic “blue”, is director. Mr J. W. Crowfoot will be working on King Ahab’s palace again at- Samaria. At the end of last season he found a collection of exquisite ivories, und lie believes that he on the track ot Ahab’s Houso of Ivory, iwhich is mentioned iu the Bible. Professor John Garstang has some more problems. tQ solve at Jericho befor e ho is sura just how the walls fell-flat. He is certain they did, and what :be -wants to know is why—earthquake or miracle.
