MINE EXPLOSION
MAN FATALLY INJURED ANOTHER IN CRITICAL CONDITION (U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copy right' SYDNEY, Jan. 21. Two miners at Balmain colliery were critically injured by' an explosion in a gas pocket. David Kerr and Henry Williams were boring rock with a hand drill when, presumably, a- spark from the hammer ignited the- gas. Kerr, despite’ frightful burns, dragged himself some distance to telephone the engineer at the surface, 3000 ft, above. Tlie cage descended and the men were taken to hospital. There is little hope of their recovery. (Received Jan. 24, 10.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 24, The miner Williams, the victim of tho Balmain mine explosion, died in hospital. Kerr is still in a) very critical condition.
