The Free State farmers are now in the front-line trenches in this economic war with Britain, said Air. Frank Alacdermott, leader of. the Farmers' League, opposing Air. De Valera s policy in an election speech. . Speaking at Roscommon, Air.. Alacdermott said: —
“The Government’s doles, bounties and subsidies lessen the terrors. of tlil situation, but there is no method of replenishing the cash for them.
' The advantage . which Free State farmers possessed in English mai’keis is being. jettisoned to gain financial ‘and constitutional reversions which could he obtained by friendly negotia-. turns. "But the Government refuses 'any settlement which would not brand its opponents as traitors.
