TASMANIA
I'or many years Tasmania and .South Australia "'ere the only States in Australia in which licensed bookmakers were not permitted to operate. Legislation was in existence in Tasmania which permitted betting under certain restricted conditions, bat it did not appeal to racing bettors. Because of the inadequacy of that, legislation there were many d-ieo-al bookmakers. Racing clubs lost revenue and the State Treasury obtained nothing f™in the unlawful trade, in the way of cither income tax or betting tax. A private member introduced into the Tasmanian Parliament a Bill to regulate and control hookmaking. The measure was passed by both Houses, after an amendment had been made limiting the operation of the Act for, two years, thus placing it on trial., favours were made to eliminate, the clauses providing .for the establishment ot beefing ' premises in ' cities and townsthevebyi confining betting to racecourses! but the provision was returned. These ' betting' shops, however, will- hetonly ;for the. purposes of se.ttjin'g 'uj>- It |s anticipated that the legislation of bookmakers- will lead |<L : increase in racing m Tasmania. ~ A ’
