Warning, to drivers of tractors, mowing machines, disc harrows etc., that they must keep the machines off the bitumen surfacing on the county roads was given at the monthly meeting of the Cook County Council yesterday, and the engineer (Mr. A. Guthrie) was authorised to take legal proceedings against any offenders with a view to recovering the value of damage caused. Mr. Guthrie introduced the subject by asking that the council grant him the authority mentioned. A great deal of damage was caused to the bitumen surfaces during the holidays, ho added, especially by tractors, mowing machines and disc harrows. Tt was obvious on some' roads that the machines had been run along the bitumen for miles on end, even though there was ample space at the sides of the bitume o strip. Generally the drivers acted through ignorance or thoughtlessness, and possibly a hint would make them desist in the future. At this period of. the year the trouble was always at its worst and it was a, very serious matter for the council ; therefor his 'request for authority to prosecute with a view to recovering the cost of repairs. Councillors agreed that this practice was the cause of serious loss to'the -'council and the authority vra® granted the’ engineer.
