LATE TURF
NOTES AND NEWS
.Talldy Karo, who hem a useful field in the Goodwood Handicap on the final day ot' the Auckland summer meeting, has been nominated for the TakapHna Cup. So far this horse has registered his best performances up to a mile and when, previously tried over a middle distance his efforts were disappointing. However, he is now a better horse than ever hp has been, and if started in the big rare at Tnknpunn he should put up a creditable showing.
It’s not often that the totali-ators are fleeced in Rvdnev frays an Australian paper), hut such was the ease at Randwick recently when £35 5s svas paid out- on three forged winning tickets representing Wexford’s number (4) in the December Nursery Handicap. When a fourth ticket was handed a pay-out clerk's suspicion was immediately aroused. Sensing danger of arrest the [verson who presented the ticket ran away. This \vas ihe first time since automatic totalisntors commenced operations at Randick, 15 years ago, that the company has been robbed in this manner
The introduction at its next race mooting on Alarch 9 and 12 of tho win and place system of totalisator betting has been decided upon by the Waikato Racing Club.
Shatter is being allowed to stride along freely in bis work at Rircarton. He has come on nicely during the last week or two, and he may he ready In show useful form before Die end of fho Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. * * * hi Victoria it was recently decided that persons who sold racing tips orally were within tho law. As a result, some of Melbourne's tipsters, who have hitherto restricted them selves to advertising, may in person sell their tips on courses. Tn England it is a regular business, and ii is amusing to see immaculate dressed individuals impressing upon racecourse crowds the value of their information, and selling tips before each race for hnlf-n-rrown. On the business they do is surprising. Prices for tips on the conyscs vary, some -oT the. venders being content to gel a penny for their information. ns to possible results, and they’ have plenty of clients.
Orapai and Glowliglit, have accepted for Trontham, galloped five furlongs on the plough at New Plymouth on Tuesday morning in 1.1. V. Orapai impressing most. B. IT. Morris has been engaged to ride him in the Telegraph Handicap.
There was nothing impressive about t-hei, gallop of Gay Crest and Tout lo Monel at Trontham on Thursday, but Gay Crest shows that, H e has lost none of Ilia pace. It is this that is puzzling his trainer. He is a fit horse, can show all his old pace, and yet cannot stay, which formerly was a feature of his displays. Lloyd thinks that racing in the spring had a. damaging 'effect, which may or may not be permanent.
A yeair ago Riccarfon, horses monopolised attention at the finish of the (Wellington Cup, Comprjs winning from Jaloux and Royal Love, with Gay Crest, fourth. Of this' quartet, Jaloux is ho only horse engaged next week, and he is welt treated with 7.11, but'it is not certain yet that he will he a starter, a definite decision being held) up for a day or two-. Apart from Jaloux, Ricca rton stables are represented by Concentrate, Great Star Red Heckle, Tout le Mohd, Juniper, and. Rocket. It i s a strong) team, and it '.seems possible that more than one of (tills lot will ho in the firing l*rto at tlio'finish.
At Trentham, Autopay, with the nsGistarico of Taura Lad in Hip fl rs *> part, .brought home by Maypay, ran four furlqngs in 49|sec. Autopay is very well at the present time,
