There passed away at papier, oil New Year’s Eve, a very well-known figure, and one more or less deeply linked with the early history of Hawke’s Bay. This was Mr. It. H. J. Hamlin, second son of the late Mr. E. E. Hamlin, who was one of the prominent figures of the Maori War, having been selected by the late Sir Donald McLean to carry despatches, a task 'which often brought him into positions of great danger. His grandfather, the Rev. James Hamlin, was ono of New Zealand's earliest colonists, having arrived in the Dominion in 1826.
