The Ministry of Agriculture is hearing an application by the National Farmers’ Union for compulsory marking to indicate the origin of imported- meat. The New Zealand MeatImporters’ Board, the Imported Meat Traders’ Association, and other organisations are opposing the National Farmers’ Union. Counsel said that New Zealand importers suggested that the granting of the application would infringe on the Ottawa agreements, and, therefore. ir was very peculiar that the Australian Commonwealth Government favored the application if it could he done in a reasonable man-
He suggested that it would further t lie spirit of these agreements, because there was a prevalent desire to purchase Empire in preference to foreign produce. Tho Federal Government has cabled a strong protest to the British Ministry against the proposed ink branding of meat-by means ot a rubber stamp. Mi’ Sidney Fitter, of a London firm of agents for New Zealand meat, -rrived by the Mariposa. He said the quota system would stabilise the meat trade in Britain. Last year New Zealand lamb at low prices found many .new buyers and their demand might be sustained even if prices improved.
