The disastrous effect of the world depression on shipbuilding is strikingly revealed in Lloyds returns for the quarter ended September 30. There was 901,007 tons under construction in the world, of which 238433 tons was in the United Kingdom the' lowest ever recorded, and 002■ - 034 abroad, the lowest since 1911. Moreover, the British figure included 150-000 tons on which work is suspended, half being represented by the giant Cvmard liner. Another striking feature is that the tonnage of motor ships being, built abroad 355.060, exceeds the steam tonnage. 377,574. whereas only 24,984 tons is being built in the United Kingdom, compared with 212.849 tons of steamships.
