One girl was Miss Alice Maud South, the 22-yea rs-old platinum blonde and amusement ‘‘queen” of the Palace Pier, whose fiance, “Ilillv Allan For'tescuo,” vanished an hour before they were to have been married on August 8. and for whom the police arc now searching. The other was Miss May East, aged 19. of ParkviHo road, Fulham. S.W.. who was to have been married at Christinas to William Chas Spencer, a 2‘2-year-old clerk. ,J 1 Hartopp avenue, Fulham. From photographs shown by °n (? girl to the other it appeared that ‘‘Fortoscuo’’ —whose courtship ol Miss South .was carried out in live weeks—and Spencer, who left ids home on July 9. and has been engaged l'or a year to Miss East—am the same man. Miss East had travelled from London with her father and Mrs. Spencer. of Hartopp-avenue. Fulham. The ,girls met at Miss South S home in Richmoml-streef. Brighton, and sat facing one another over an uncut wedding cake- —the cake lor the wedding that should take taken place a few days ago. Miss South said Fortescue wore a diamond ring, and Miss East, smiling bravely, replied: "'lt was ihe ring I gave him when we were engaged 1” Both Miss South, who was wearing the engagement ring "!• ortescue gave her. and Miss Ea-t. said ihev Mill wanted to marry the man. Miss East adding: “We were buying the furniture for our home when lie disappeared.” The girls promised io correspond and le arrange, if possible, t,, sec f 'Fortescue” together when lie is found.
