RECORD SEASON
TOKOMARU BAY WORKS
BIG ADVANCE ON LAST YEAR
Record killings, since the works were taken over by'the G.S.F.M. and M. Coy. in 1921, were made at the Tokomaru Bay freezing works .during the season just closed, according to figures made available yesterday by the manager of the company, Air. A. F. Salmon., .The total attained was 180,582 carcases (in sheep equivalent),. an increase of 01,608 carcases on the previous season and of 2778 carcases on tlio previous record season which was in 1921-22.
In common with other concerns, the works have benefited over recent years by.the fact that there lias been less opportunity of disposing of stores, while another important factor in the increase is that farmers of iho district have seen the wisdom of supporting their, own works to the. fullest extent possible .
As far as the different classes of stock wero concerned, tho works last season, as compared with the previous period, handled a very substantially greater number of sheep and lambs, but there were decreases in cattle,, calves and pigs. Approximately 28,000 freight carcases are 3till in storo at the works, but it is hoped to clear the last of these out in August. Killing returns for the past three seasons, with the totals given, in sheep equivalent, are as follows:—?
1929-30 1930-31 1931-32. Siieep .. 54,235 " 66,228 109,553 Lambs .. 20,253 29,547 59,798 Cattle .. 1,212 1,480 886 Calves — 1,175 1 Pigs 472 891 298 Totals 89,970 118,914 180,582
