DEMAND FOR STANDARD WAGE MASS MEETING AT WELLINGTON MOTION FAVORING STRIKE DECLARED CARRIED SPEAKERS ADVOCATE DIRECT ACTION HOSPITAL BOARD’S FIRM STAND (Press Association.l Jan. 26. Whether all work on relief jobs should cease until standard wages were paid was the question placed before a mass meeting of relief workers hqkl in the Winter Show building this evening. There was an attendance of over 2000 and, although a 'motion favoring a strike was declared carried by a delegate on the platform, it was impossible to determine the exact position on account of the pandemonium.

The meeting lasted for two hours and delegates were present from Hntt. Eastbourne, Khandallah, Happy Valley and Wellington. A majority of the speakers, if not all, criticised tin' No. 5 scheme and the eondi lions under which they were asked to •work and advocated “direct, notion.’’ The Social Welfare Committee of the Wellington Hospital Board has 'decided that any man who refuses to work when il is available will tie refused relief.

The ITutt and Petrine groups arc sending delegates to the city to-night, when the attitude of the city men will he decided. Later. The Trades and Labor Council today decided to recommend relief workers iri Ilutt Valley and Eastbourne to return to work, the council undertaking to seek redress for grievances and to endeavour to settle the question of the standard wage payment by negotiation.
