THURSDA Y COMPETITION ; DEFENCE AND CASH STORES WIN FINE SCORE BY C, SCHOLLUM , A further round in tho Thursday competition was played at the Oval yesterday under very pleasant weather conditions, Cash Stores defeating High School by 79 runs on the first innings (exactly doubling the total .by their, opponents) and.. Defence winning- against All Comers by 26 runs also on the first innings, Thfot (outstanding individual performance on tho day was a fine innings of ,78 by O. Scholium for Cash' Stores. CASH STORES v. HIGH SCHOOL A dashing innings for 78 by 0. Scholium was the main factor in Cash Stores win against High School, this player making exactly tho total which tho losers ran up. Batting first, Cash Stores began badly, two men being out for three runs, G. Filo, playing his first game for a long time, then assisted G.< Scholium to put on 30, eventually leaving for a bright 17. McLean (11) helped to add a few and then a fine stand, between C. Scholium and Stewart took tho total past 100, this pair putting on 51. Stewart’s valuable 26 included five fours. Eight wickets wore down for 114, But Scholium then found another good partner in Eade and these two carried the total to 158, when tho innings- concluded, the team being one man short. k Schollum was the last man dismissed and then had strung together the fine tally of 78, hitting two sixers and five fours. Ho played a slashing hand and scored freely off all the trundlers, (rattling on the runs particularly fast over tlio latter stages. Mace, secured four for 54, Flavell two for 14 and Sharp turn for 22.

School also made a bad start, Mace being dismissed with only 10 on the board. Bayliss improved matters with some enterprising hatting and stayed until he Had collected 21, while Sharp (13) and Kahlenherg (11) also made useful contributions but the side was eventually out for 79. L. Scholium bowled well to take four for 4.7, Stewart kept a very good length to securo three for 18 in eight overs and Hueston brought the innings to a summary conclusion by taking three wickets in the course of half a dozen balls, making his final analysis three for 11 from four overs Cash Stores batted again and made 87 -for seven wickets, Eade notching 23j (three fours) Hueston 20, and L. DEFENCE v. ALL COMERS

There was somo bright hatting in the game between Defence and All .Comers, which was played on a’, wicket of a decidedly “sporting” nature, with the ball tending to bounce unduly high. , ‘ ‘ Defence took first innings and began well,' J. M. Robertson ; making 34 •out of .45 • put on for, the opening stand, hitting' five fours: Nicholson sent Shelton’s. second'ball for a great sixer and took two off the next, hut then was nicely caught one-handed by the bowler from tHo following delivery. (King left one run later, haying made 13 soundly, and Wiggins was very unluckily rim out through stepping outside His crease as the ball was being returned to the bowler. Graham took a bix from tho first hall sept down, to Rim, brut Harry Ellis was sixth man out at iQ3j,.jthe .veteran thaking a welcome re-appear-ance, showing mnch of his old' skill

in collecting 16. P. C. Dwyer also had his first innings since being injured in the opening match of the season and showed that he was not far from' his best by knocking up 17, including three fours. J. Smith used the long handle at the close, and carried his bat for 17, the last wicket putting on 22 and bringing the total up to 131. McKinley three for 19, Bound three fov 25, and Shelton three for 41 were the successful trundlers.

Mason and Griffiths opened the All Comers innings well by sending up 27, but the former was then nicely taken by Oliver off Smith for 13 (three fours.) Griffiths ran his score to 17, but four men were out for only 45'. Mahoney and Shelton made a good stand which added *29, the former theii departing for a-nicely-made 20. Shelton hit three fours in his 16, but tho advent of. King to the howling crease saw wickets fall rapidly. Illingworth sent one nicely through slips for a brace and glided another well to log for a similar tally, in a good attempt to hit off the runs, but.the last wicket fell at. 105. .King finished up with tho fine nn T alysis of six for 18 off 4.1 overs and sent down some excellerlt balls. Nicholson also 'bowled well, but unluckily, and Smith obtained two for 12.

Defence batted again for seven overs, making 69 for the loss of three wickets. Smith was very forceful in notching 20, his score including one six .and three fours,, while Nicholson also batted very freely for 2k not out (thiToo fours).
