CHURCH SERVICE BROUGHT
TO CLOSE
SUNDAY NOISES IN GARAGE
At the Foxton Alagistrate’s Court a case of considerable interest to churchgoers and garage proprietors was heard before Air J.. L. Stout, S.AI., when the Rev. AV. H. Watson, Vicar of All Saints’, jirpceeded against L. G. Potts, an employee of the Standard Service Station, (ior disturbing a religious service on Sunday evening last. Mr VV. Hairl, manager of the station, on behali of Potts, entered a plea of not guilty. Mr Al. B. Bergin, for the plaintiff stated that the noise of opening benzine drums ..at,, the station,which is situated only two and a-hall’ chains across the .road*, from the church, had interrupted the evening service. About two years, ago* a complaint had been lodged Against, a similar happening, but ’if a, conviction was ottered the .vicar : not ask for ii severe'; penalty.' • llev. ' AV. H.' AVaiton; in detailing the circumstances, stated that twice during the isefvice.'. worshippers had been , “disturbed .anJ " 1 finally through' l , the ttrrilic noise caused by the opening of a .40 gallon drym lie had found .ft 'necessary-to bring the service to a' close.. The morning lie had complained to Air Hart and requested that-the- cleaning of cars’, etc. f , ! be not carried out during, the time., of church -,service. --. Mr Hart contended' tliat the .work complained- of: was a matter of urgency. In , his evidence, • Potts' statecj that he had hammered once or tw ice in an end6aybur : to open, the drum to procure benzine. Upoh receiving a telephone inessage asking' him to desist until after'church'service had concluded, lie. ceased his endeavours. The.
