Mat he son. second officer of the steamer Waimca, but it is not all it appears to be. AH. Matheson is one of six New Zealanders who have drawn horses in the Irish Free State Hospital Sweepstake on the Manchester November Handicap, but there are nine others sharing his ticket. When the Waimea arrived at Auckland yesterday. Mr. Matheson said the ticket was-, merely in his name. He pointed out he had been, extraordinarily lucky, particularly, because he had been “brought in” to/ form a syndicate of subscribers to the sweepstake. “Just kick,” he said. “It was the first time I had subscribed to an Irish Sweep. I had . taken art union tickets before, but this is my first win. I simply contributed to a ticket and that was all I thought about it. At present the ticket in Mr. Matheson'’s name will yield an assured return of £660. If Notice Board, the. horse drawn by the. syndicate wins the Manchester November Handicap next Saturday the prize money will amount to £30,000. Several other members of the Waimea’s crew were stated to have shares in Air. Matheson’s ticket.
