President Cosgravo, speaking at Charleville, expressed the belief that the British Government would not agree', to the: alteration in. the Statute of. Westminster, whereby it was set down in black and white that the Irish Free State, may- not repeal the Treaty, of' 15)22 He added: "The Irish’ Government wouW continue to defend the treaty, but warned the Churchill group that il must not change the treaty from a pledge of freedom to a symbol oi inferiority. He would say that- no one in Ireland or.
