PHAR LAP AND THE CUP. MANY "TROUBLES. . SYDNEY, Nov. 4. Now that the hubbub of the Melbourne Clip has died down, two opinions of Phar Lap and his Cup engagement expressed by successful trainers before the race may be recalled. Both were decidedly, against his chances; indeed, both definitely said ho should never have been in the race, let alone start. One, a Randwick man with a long experience and many successes, including Melbourne Clips, was called in in an advisory capacity when Phar Lap was in Sydney. It was noticed then that all kinds of extraordinary care was taken with Phar Lap in the selection ot galloping grounds,

This was due to badly cracked heels which have troubled the champion every time he has galloped this season. The cracks open with the play on the foot each stride, and no ointment or liniment could effect a euro. Tho only way that could be obtained was by complete rest. The other trainer of. a younger school, bait on lps record successful and capable, weqt even further back back for Ins reason for keeping Phar Lap out of the race. Trainers talk to one another, and the ono quoted knew authoritively that for more than • a week after Phar Lap’s defeat in the autumn by Waterline, there was serious sign of internal trouble. It was announced that ho was suffering from kidney disorder, but it is known that tho trouble was more deep-sfeated.

The trainer asked 'whether it was logical to expect a horse to recover; quickly enough to carry 10.10 over two miles in tho best staying com-

pnnv. There is no doubt now that Messrs Davis and Telford are. sorry thev listened to the clamour of tho multitude or were attracted by the glamor of tho race. Telford, as trainer, apparently realised what might he the consequences. How serious they will be remains to be seen. FTMA.TF.FR WTNS DERBY CUP PP A hv E’' l '’ f7o»'vri<M + ! NOTES AND NEWS . Few horses at Ellerslio. are doin'* better than TJanore. -u-lto baa come on verv fast durintr the last few weeks. O n several occasions within the past couple of weeks T-lanore has registered some smart gallops over sprint distnneep and it'will not be long before pbe is bank to her correct, racin'* form nra.in. This mare is engaged in th" Borough Handicnp at Takapuna and if started is likely to beat more, than will beat her. ■* Hr * It was first announced in the .“Star” some time ago that L. IH. Watson, who wa« disqualified for life ia. connection with the Royal Survey case, had instructed counsel to issue a writ against the Auckland District 'Committee of the New Zealand Racin'* Conference seeking the setting aside of his disqualification and claiming damages. The writ has now been issued. and the amount claimed is £IOOO. * * # At Ellerslie on Thursday morning Cynthia N. registered a good effort over seven furlongs on the.course proper, running the distance in 1.32 3-5. The imported mare ha.s been shaping well in her work lately and lias never looked better than slie does at the present time. She has not had a race since last July, but will most likely be seen out at the approaching Takapuna meeting at the end of the mefcth.

An incident, which might have had a dramatic effect on the Melbourne Cup occurred at Flemington shortly before the race. The trainer of another runner in the Cup waved a white handkerchief in front of White Nose, and on his right side. Fortunately*, White Nose noticed the fluttering handkerchief, otherwise a protest would have been entered against his win. White Nose has a. peculiar scum over his right eye, and the trainer in question thought that ha might be blind in that eye. In that case he would have been disqualified from running under V.R.C. rules, which debar onoeved horses.

Only the fact that he wrenched his near foreleg a furlong from the post in the Mel bourne Cup prevented Concentrate from achieving Australia’s supremo racing honor, is the, opinion expressed by the gelding’s trainer, H. B. Lorigan, who returned to Wellington by the Maunganui last Tuesday. Lorigan added that Concentrate finished on three legs, so that lus effort in holding out foi third money wa s a remarkably courageous performance. Concentrate was on board the Maunganui, and so were the other three members ol Lorigan's Australian team—Oratorian, Gesture and Lavington. Concentrate walked all right when landed and is by no means a bad case. Tlie other horses looke dwell after the trip. Concentrate did not actually break down in the Melbourne Cup, but he gave himself a very severe wrench. He is" now to be blistered and turned out for a long spell. Lorigan believes lie will then come hack sound for another preparation. No plans have been made yet for the other three horses, but it is unlikely that Gesture will ever race again. Once or twice she raised hopes that she was recovering some of her brilliance, but the hopes were not realised. Concentrate and Oratorian each won a race on the trip. With the smallest turn of fortune Concentrate might m addition have been successful in the A.J.C. Metropolitan, in which he was a head away, second, after apparently not having been ridden with the best judgment, and also in the Melbourne Cup. Layingtnn did not win a race, hut ran consistently well and was several times placed.
