Hawke’s Bay is proud of its climate; but from the farmer’s point of view the district is sometimes embarrassingly sunny. The three rivers that flow through the fertile plains bordering on Hastings, however,' never run dry, and there is every year an increasing tendency to make use of them for irrigation schemes with which to combat the effects of periods of dry weather. Irrigation schemes are for the present more or less affairs of entirely individual enterprise, but this year two community efforts to establish systems are being made. The first proposal came from a group of settlors at Ngatarawa, and now the orehardists in the Havelock North district are bestirring themselves to get a scheme on foot. It is expected that the area which it is proposed to. irrigate will be formed into a special water rating district, and a loan raised to cover the cost of reticulation,
