UAWA COUNTY
MONTHLY MEETING . The monthly meeting of tlio Uawa County Council was held on > Saturday Present - the Chairman (Cr. J. McNeil), and Crs.' E. C. Loisel, J. L, Reeves, C. E. Smith, S. King Spencer, and P. T. Weeks. Leave of absence was granted to 'Crs. H. P. Barron' and H. R. Irving. Messrs. Rees, Bright, Waueliop and Parker advised 1 that the Magistrate had delivered his reserved judgment on the distribution of heavy traffic license fees and that the ITawa County’s proportion was 8.36 per cent of the the total' fees collected. Th© Cook County Council wroto stating that it Was proposed to make a distribution of Heavy Traffic License fees to September 30. The Minister in charge of Unemployment invited the assistance of tho County chairman and members' of tho County Councils in devising plans for the employment of relief Workers on productive works. No. 4 District Highways Council advised that tho fixed contribution for thd maintenance of the Gisborne-Opo-tiki via the Coast main highway has been reduced from £66 to £SO per mile per annum as from October 1 last. No. 4 District Highways Council advised that tlie Main Highways Board had reviewed the proposed contribution for'maintenance of main highways north of Tblftga Bay and it had 1 been decided to reduce the contribution to £SO per mile per annum and to include the section passing through the township. —The Chairman reported (Hat tho offer had been accepted and .that the Main Highways Board bad 1 taken over the section as i'dorn November 1. E. C. Kelly applying for -renewal of billiard room license.—Granted subject to the usual conditions. Messrs. Rees, Bright, Wauchop and Parker' advised that they had apportioned charges between the Matakaoa County and Uawa County for representative in. Heavy Traffic License fee ease. (' Tlie poundkoeper’s report showed 24 head of stock impounded during tho month. On the motion of Cr. Loisel seconded by Cr- Weeks it was re-solved to accept H. L. Ganderton’s tender for doe collars. The notion of the sub committee in . lotting a tender at Ids per chain to H. Nelson for fencing Hutchinson’s Hill was approved. The registration fee of all cattle and sheep docs was fixed at. 2s 6d each arid all other dogs-7s Gd’ each. _ The ohairman and Crs- Loisel and Smith' were appointed a suE committee to review all insurances. Instructions were given to the Clerk 9, take all necessary proceedings forthe recovery of ou(standing rates. Tt was decided that tenders he.called for pulling down the building at Mangatnna, carting and re-erecting at; Tnnwliarepnrne. and also the present cottage at Tanwharaparao and that the chairman and engineer bo. informed to act. The Engineer’s report stated : Main Highways: Ordinary maintenance work has been• carried out. Tho Main Highways Board look over the whole length commencing Ist. November. Secondary Highways: Further progress has been made on building up. (lie shoulders with papa op the first two miles of the Tolaga-Tauwharc-parae Highway. Shoulders have also been strengthened near Reeves and at Takapau river gravel has been carted out and spread-on tbo surface-and on the shoulders on the corners. The upper four miles is now in bad order (ho metal ravelling and becoming very rough and lengths of it should bo blinded at an early date. It will bo necessary to arrange? for Napier metal for sealing the bitumen lengths this season. On the Harbour Highway a small amount of gravel patching has boon done.
Arakihi Riding: The surfaceman has been engaged in grading most; of-tbo period and is now engaged in metalling, the West .Ho creek crossing and clearing slips. Ha.uiti Riding:'The platform bridge on the old'Coasfc-'road .needs considerable overhauling being in an unsafe condition. This work can be carried out at an estimated cost of £25. 1
Mangaheia Ruling; The Taharangi Bridge is now completed. Paremata Riding: The motor grader has shaped up the Delta Road. Tauwhareparae Riding; The work of clearing the slips on Hutchinson’s Hill is now complete. A contract for fencing this deviation has been, let and the work is now in hand. The damaged fence on Reeves frontage will alsp be attended to. The motor grader has commenced in this Riding having done a few-days for the Public Works Department on- the metaling Relief Works at... Caldwell’s Hill, and then bavinu completed the length as far as the Huanui junction. The grader is-now working on the Huanui Road and a horse and dray .is also engaged on the Parahcka length of this road filling in the rough places. Tolaga Riding: Various places that were made up with pa on- under the Relief Works have been rolled, down General: Work under Hie No. ft. Scheme lias been proceeding on. the following: Stock’s- Road, Mnngafunn; Roland's Drain, Lower Paremata; Hauiti Drain; Gorse clearing Township;’ Drain, at Paremata Soldier Settlement; Clearing slips, Caldwell’s Hill; Tolaga School. Tbo work proposed to be done filling and culver ting, at Fitzgeralds, Mangatokornu, has not yet. been commenced but will be proceeded with as soon as possible. The baths have ; been installed nt the County cottages.
