(Special To The Times). AUCKLAND, Sept. 15. „ Fears that -the recent privilege, of smoking in the common room is to he denied them, are held by some fittbo women students at Auckland University College. It was only a few months ago that the Professorial Board, which has control of such matters, saw fit to allow smoking in the women’s common room, but A has now come to the ears of the students that the board is reconsidering its decision. It is understood that the board has made inquiries from responsible students and has more or loss agreed that smoking by women students in the common room is lacking in dignity, and that the example is not of' the best for the younger students; Its attitude has not been fully disclosed. The common room is the one place in the college where the decorum demanded within -its precints can within limits he laid aside. It i* here that between lectures, students meet in conversation and other quiet recreation.

Some donbt exists whether it is the wish ef the majority that smoking should he allowed, and there is a suggestion that a vol, should he taken on the matter . However, whatever is the Professorial Board’s decision will end the matter one way or the other, vote or no vote.

Although it is not hold by those who desire a continuation 01 the privilege- to bp any argument in its favor, they state it was observed that, some of the professors’ wives when entertained at afternoon tea by the students in the common room were (not averse Vo a cigarette. They state that smoking is permitted in the women’s common rooms at Victoria College. Canterbury College and Otago Universitv.
