POLITICAL PROBLEMS
REFORM OPPOSITION TO PRIMAGE DUTY
WILL PREMIER GIVE WAY?
(Special to the Timet.) WELLINGTON, Aug- IS.
There is (says the Dominion) a growing feeling in the lobbies in connection with the Government’s taxation proposals that the Prime Minister will concede the wishes of the- Refcrm Party, which, in order to uphold its previously expressed principles, is expected to oppose the primage duty,, and one or two specific items on the increased Customs schedule. Sincp the Reform Party several years ago removed entirely the duties on British crockery, linoleums, linen piece goods and other items, simply as a gesture of trade reciprocity to the Old Country it is to be expected that the party will no entirely agree with the Prime Minister’s proposal to reimposo taxation on those commodities. The Land and Ineome-Tax Amendment Bill, which is understood to be in draft form, and which will embrace the new income-tax proposals, it *is now thought, may not encounter more than slight opposition' from tho Reform Party. If this Bill appears first, and the discussion is prolonged a test of party feeling will accordingly be delayed.
