TAYO RETIREMENTS
VACANCIES NOT TO BE FILLED
The term of appointment* uf two members of the Legislative Council, the lions. V. 11. Reed (Auckland) and A. S. Malcolm (Southland), expired on Tuesday. They were appointed on tlie recommendation of the Coates Government on KM It June, 11.24. The' Prime • Minister (the lit. -<ni. G. AV. Forbes) has announced that the vacancies will not be filled. '1 his is in pursuance of the economy policy declared some months ago, when tlie Prime Minister stated that nt I'nesh lappointineubs or reappointments to thq Council would bo made for the present. The' first member of, the Council affected by the decision was Sir Frodoriek Lang, who retired on 22nd February last. An exception was made; however, in the cases of the Speaker, Sir" Walter Car across, who was ro-appointed when hits term expired oil i7tli March. With tho retirement ol Messrs, llced and Malcolm, tlie strength jA tho Council will be reduced to 00. It is of interest to note that- next year the seven-year appointments ol ho loss than twelve councillors will expire s Alio Hons. It. H. Alitson (el Auckland), AY. T, Fleming (Otago), G. J. Garland (Auckland), J. B. Cow (Auckland), A. F. Hawke (Otago), Sir John Sinclair (Otago), AV. Stewart (Auckland), )G. M ; . Thomson (Otago), and-AY. H. Tnggs (Canterbury) will bo due to retire on Abe 7th Mav, and the Hons. L,, M. IsHt (Canterbury),. Sir R. Heqton Rhodes (Canterbury),' and G. 'Witty (Canterbury) on 2St]i October.
