WORKLESS RELIEF

GISBORNE LOROUGII MEASURES

NO. d SCHEME UTILIZED

OYER IUP NOW ON RELIEF WORKS. According to statements made by the Mayor (Mr. D. AY. Coleman) at the Borough Council meeting last evening, more than 100 men are now engaged on borough relief works and it is hoped, within a few days, to have a large proportion of the local unemployed engaged in works under the Unemployment Hoard's No. o scheme.

The subject was introduced by a letter from the board which expressed thanks for tiie councilL offer of co-operation under the No. o scheme. The Mayor explained that ibo scheme was now under way. though it was evident from a paragraph in the press, that the council had been considered somewhat slow in taking action. It should be remembered, however, that local bodies could not start works such as contemplated by the scheme without material and the board would provide only labor. That material was expensive and the council had only limited financial resources. Nevertheless the engineer bad been instructed- to provide as much work as possible, under the No. f> scheme, in the "way ot cleaning reserves etc. A number of men were put on yesterday under the scheme, a number more would be put on today and still more on Friday. Over ICO men were engaged on relief works in the borough, so that n was clear that the council was doing its full share ,iu this direction. A number more would be put on relict works and the council was doing its best. AYithiu a few days it was hoped to giv c employment to a large proportion of the local unemployed. Or-. H. E. Maude suggested that a suitable job under the No. 5 scheme would be' the removal of the wafersiders’ shed across the river and the beautifying of the old site It was explained that these wcic matters for the Harbor Hoard and councillors expressed the opinion that the board might also carry out thes e jobs as relict works. . .. The Unemployment Hoard s letter was then received.
