While India is praying that the conversations between th© Viceroy and Mr. Gandhi might bring a of heart ill India’s smiling sphinx,' little hope is felt from what Gandhi has said at interviews. Full and frank discussions on all points brought no more than a pious utterance that the future is with God. It is understood that Gandhi should: declare that Indians shall b© free to ' civil disobedience and the’ manufacture of salt, and, if necessary, b© allowed to continue picketing foreign- cloth and liquor ’ shops, but some other congress leaders are working towards conciliation.
