ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES
(Press Association.) NAPIER, Jan. 5. Complaints received by the police regarding an entertainment presented in tile Municipal Theatre on Saturday night led to the arrest, early this morning, of Franklin John Smith, aged 33, on a charge of false pretences. Smith, alias * Pit Pot Smith, appeared before Justices in the Police. Court later in tile morning on the following charge: ‘‘lhat, on January 3, at Napier, with intent to defraud, lie did obtain from William Nedlson the sum of nine shillings by means of a certain false pretence to wit by falsely representing that he was a master magician known as "Carter the Great,” Stating that .further similar charges would bevbfought against Smith, DctectivGsgergeant Fitzgibbon, who pro sami ted, applied for a remand unmail being allowed in the sum of £IOO in self, together with two sureties of £6O each. An historic building, a link with the earliest missionaries, the Anglican mission at Puriri in 1833, was totally destroyed by lire at Parawai, Thames, last night. The building was erected by Maori converts for the Revs. Maunsell and Davis when the mission was moved from Puriri to Parawai. The back portion, where the fire originated, was the original building, but the trout had been renovated. Occupants of the building lost all, escaping in their night clothes. The relationship between the Well'ingjfcm i Trades and Labour Council and the New Zealand Allium#of Labour (to which the WelCouncil is affiliated) is to bo discussed at a meeting. Foi’ some time there has been talk of a Revival of the Trades Councils Federation, a body to which the councils in Wellington, Auckland, Chris.tchiirch, Dunedin and other, ceint-res were affiliated, and. lit |is probable that this subject will also be considered at the meeting. The Councils at Christchurch this month convened a conference of . Trades for the purpose of considering the re-establishment of the Trades Councils Federation. HIKERANGI MTNE BEING DE-WATERED. < fPreSvS Association.) • WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. Advice has been received by the Mines Department that the • water in the Hikurangi mine, which has been flooded for some months, has been lowered to a depth of 14ft. and that it is expected that by to-night the mine will be completed dewatered. The flooding of the mine has caused great hardship amongst the miners of the district as well as amongst the people of the township of f .Hikurangi. The mine gives employment to a large number of men and. ibr is hoped the activities of the mine will he resumed in the near future. V, „
