The, -statement by the Mayor of i- Nelson that .the -Government had, | handed ":overA the,, responsibility for dealing with the unem- . pioyment question to the Unemploy- • merit Board, and that it bad-paid off c alt men on-relief; works, was.-refuted by the Minister for Public Works, in • a.' statement on Saturday. He said [ the suggestion , made- was. entirely contrary.-to'fact'. The Minister ex-- ' plSirigd that ,the provision ofyemploy- ; merit for men. on GQvemmerit relief ’ works was still being attended to by himself., and r other members -qf the Cabinet > Employment'.Committee, although the committee would only be too pleased to - receive!. suggestions : from;the iUnemployment' Board. He also explained that the Cabinet Employment Committee was of; the op- ; iriionfcthat, at this time of the year, ; when , seasonal work is; or- should ■ shortly, bei available, the period of . continuous, employment of single men on relief warlcs .should be limited to about three months. Dealing specially with the Nelson-Marihorough district, (Mr Taverner stated that it had been decided to dispense with the of -about 100 single men who . had- been employed on relief works in that- distinct- for over four month's and fill the resultant vacancies with other, men from Nelson, Marlborough and Wellington, who had been: without work for several months and were, consequently, in very straitened circumstances. This notion, in addition to distributing government ; relief among a larger number of unemployed,, would release .physically fit'men ;who would he available for farming, -and agric-ul- , tural work in the. district..

UGLY SCENE IN CHRISTCHURCH.

CHRISTQJIURCH, Dec. 6. An ugly scene developed in Cathedral Square this morning when the police ordered a meeting of unemployed to be- broken up. A (struggle tp.ok place - between two or three constables and the •unemployed leader when the latter persisted in attempting to address the gathering, of over 300 men. Other- constables then had to use force to keep the crowd hack. Finally the leaders of tho men decided to change the place of meeting, and some of them marched-to Victoria Square, . where the gathering was fairly orderly. A banner carried by the jnen r.ead: ‘-‘Fools Starve, Men Fight—Work or Wages .”

UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD’S SUBSIDY OF £25,000.
APPLICATIONS. APPROVED TOTAL £19,356.

WELLINGTON; Dec. 6. . As a result- of the Unemployment Board’s offer to local authorities of subsidies up to a. total of £25,000 on a,basis of £2 for £1 as, a special expediency measuje for the relief of unemployment over the Christmas season _ a number of applications have been received. -.Up to yesterday the board had made allocations amounting to £19,356, which- have been approved by the Finance Minister. The hoard is onlv recommending subsidies on works carried out with money derived from other than Government sources.
