Hhou treasurer, added that the work done was practically maintenance arid the cost came out of the ordinary expenditure on wages. ; .A ' Mr. C. H. Bull referred to;, the pleasing increase in membership which gave the,..club some cash'to carry over the off-season, also, great* lv improving the whole financial position Country members’ and greet* fees'showed- a substantial:-increase, the advance in respect of the latter item being largely due to the _ good work of collection. The sum Pi had -been set aside by the .committee as the basis of a fund for the replacement of the. triplex mower. Regarding discussion with the Borough Council over a water tan at the links, he explained that an offer of £lO had been made jn r espect of the account of £sl tendered,. but so far no reply had been received.. . The report and balance sheet, were then adopted. .. ... .C- . No fresh nominations were received for office-bearers and all wero re-elec-ted .as follows:—President. . Mr. E. M. Hutchinson,; vice-presidents., Messrs. J. H. Bull, F. W, Nojan and O. M. Dodgshun; chib captain,. Mr. ’R. U. Burke: committee, Messrs—N-’H. Bull. C. IT. Wells, W. R. B. Willock. R. E. Gamhrill. G. W. A notice of motion, that the club’s name be.changed from "Poverty Bat'” to “Gisborne,” moved by Mr. R. U. Burke, was strongly defeated. Mr. Burke stated that his motion was not inspired-by the recent newspaper correspondence- on this; matter, as be believed a great deal of Hnmbug had been said about the district suffering through its name. Moreover. he believed that. names with historical associations should he adhered to and he would, strongly oppose any attempt to change the name of tho district. As far as the club was concerned, however, name Poverty Bay did not seem distinctive enough, since the district covered so wide an area. The club also was closely associated with the town and he considered that, as was the case in oilier towns, the club should bo Known bv the name of the town.' -I. The motion was formally seconded bv the president.

Mr. C. H. Bull mentioned that a club member visiting the smith had found that Gisborne was not associated with ihe Poverty Bay Golf Club in the minds of many southern, players. Mr. G. W..Willock commented that, a great difficulty lay in the fact that all trophies, honors’ hoard etc., were engraved nr inscribed with tho name “Poverty Bay.” Considerable trouble would be experienced in making the change of name on. these.

"It seems to be the custom in many places,’’ remarked Mr. N. H. Bull, “to name the golf clubs after the locality. In our case, perhaps, if we are looking for a new name and wish to follow suit, we might call it the abattoirs club.” The speaker, added that many of . their members were resident in the country and the name Poverty Bay appeared far mote suitable to his .mind, as it- embraced their wide membership. AH. F. Galvin stated that this district was.peculiar in that almost .all its interests were centred in the one town and, with their previous associations, he was opposed to changing from a general to a purely local name.

Air. Burke explained that he -did not strongly favor the change, but had simply brought forward ike matter since it had been suggested by several members. Ho was ready to withdraw the motion.

The motion, however, was put to the meeting, and overwhelmingly defeated.

SUMMER WORKS PROPOSED,

Air.’ R. W. J. Edwards, the secretary, explained that ■ the following work had been resolved on for the summer months: To build a proper tee for men at the iStb and also make a. new green there, both ..in rtccu'danee with Mr. Redhead’s plan; to improve the approach to the 15th green; to top-dress with sand, soil and manure all along the fairways with the aid of the machine kindly loaned to the club' bv Air. E. .R. Black; to remove tree-guards and clean around trees ; to keep fairways, greens and putting green in good or- , der through tho summer; to fill in as

many holes in the fairways as possible which the top-dressing will, not rectify. The work about the 18th had already been completed, added Mr. Edwards.

OPEN TOURNAMENT SUGGESTED.

The president inquired whether there had been any suggestions of holding an open tournament at Gisborne?

Mr. C. H. Williams pointed out that the-idea had been .mentioned.-,at Rotorua by other members there, ns there' were two or three days of the holidays immediately following tho Rotorua tournament. . Mr. C. H. Bull said that he had been assured by Napier players that quite, a fair entry would comic?, from Hawke’s Bay in the event of an open tournament-being-held .here.
