The counting of tlie votes is necessarily slow owing to the complicated preierentinl voting system. Indications are that the Liberals, which are the Government party, will lose seats, without gains anywhere. Premier Butler's seat J< in jeopardy. Contests occurred in forty-two constituencies, for which there were ninetyfive candidates. Tel- Copyright (Received April 6. 5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 5. Five hundred workers at the huge Port Kembla iron and steel works have received notice of dismissal. Scores of miners employed at Hoskhi’s local collieries have been reduced to half time. It is stated the reason for retrenchment is the cancellation of orders for steel girders, owing to tlie slackness in the building trade and tin* suspension of railway contracts at Wollongong and Port Kembla.
