/ DROWNING FATALITY" in * WAIOEKA. YOUNG SCHOOLMASTER’S END. (Special to the Times.) OPO'ITKI, Jan. 2. A drowning fatality took place m tho AVaioeka river this afternoon. Mr. John Fitzgerald. 20, single, schoolteacher at Lnaugahua has been visiting his uncle, Mr. I . I'itzg raid, of Opotiki, accompanied by ins father, Air. Jack Fitzgerald, and today took a boy aged 11 and a gri aged 9, the children of Air. Joe Mcrrie, for a row in a boat which suddenly struck a snug and capsized, all three being thrown into the river. The bov and the girl managed to irefc out but All'. Fitzgerald was unable to reach the hank and sank m eight feet of water. A near neighbor, Mr. James Wilson. and liis emp'oyee. Mr. AVdfred Vanstone, on being notified oi t* l ” accident, hurried to the river. Air. Vanstone went in and, after considerable diffir-u'ty, managed to secure the bodv. Dr. Candy soon arrived •md he ‘and others, including the ooliee, tried resuscitation methods for over two hours, but- without success. , , The inmiest. will be neld to-morrow bv the Coroner. Air. F. J. Short Great sympathy is felt for tle father, as* this was his only c-hnd. Tho mother is dead.
