New Year's Day iu Australia brought its usual fatalities. .J wo were drowned in New South Vales, one man being carried out at Bondi Beach, where DO others wore rescued during the afternoon. Three people lost their lives in Tasmania when a mail tram ran down a ear in which were seven people. William Gibson, his wife and child were killed, four others being severely injured. Three wero killed Hi \ ietoria in road accidents, while in Western; Australia two brothers, Lloyd aml Roy Hardinge, were drowned iu the Swan River.

The Melbourne to Sydney Limited express collided with a pilot engine near Seymour, \ icloria, last, night. Passengers were flung headlong by the impact. Two were injured and several women fainted. The express engine was forced elf the rails, which were badly twisted. The pilot engine was hurled bodily irom the line. Several empty carriages were thrown against an embankment. The driver of the pilot engine sulfered head injuries.
