ORMOND SPORTS
I. AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. Good fortune attended the Ormond Sports Oph’s meeting yesterday, when contrary to the tradition of years, tho day was gloriously fine .and, in consequence, tho attendance constituted a record. Lunch was catered for on the grounds, and ■side-shows and sweet-stalls had their share of business also. A line programme of athletic events wont of? splendidly, managed by the Gisborne A. A. Club officials with Messrs A. S. Parker, R. Biggar, Dj W. Coleman and J. T. Herbert acting as judges, while Messrs. M. McMahon and P. Fulton took the times. No particularly fast ' times were registered, which may be accounted for by tho .somewhat rough state of the track, but good finishes in most of the events were ’the order of the day, proving Mr. C. McCoy’s efficiency us a handicaps per.
Honors in the ladies’ sprint section went to Miss E. Williamson, who carried off the Egan Oup with a total of 8 points, M. McMahon headed the cyclists with 14 points for the Bai-dwell Cup, gleaned from all the wheel events save tho Consolation Handicap, while pride of place in the men’s running events went to It. Wallace,- who’ has been running well at .recent meetings. He carried off- the Bolton Cup. gaining top marks in all running events on the programme. Frank McDonald earred off the L.V A Pud, the hitler with Dobbin a Hose «wnml taking Air. J. R. Kirk’s medal for points in the 100yds., 220yds., and 440yds. handicaps. Not content with one special trophy. McDonald also annexed the Ormond Gift Handican Cup. A fine run in flic* 3 ( k>"dv handicap gave Debbie the Grani Down’e Memorial Cup.# The field events, as usual, gave Flovd Atkins scope to display his outstanding talent at the shot putting and discus throwing events, the American sending the “pill” s':?t 9in. and in an exhibition throw, making the discus travel the splendid distance of 118 ft. Tins. The way in which D. Coates cleared oft. oin. in tho high jump was a pleasure to behold, hut 'F. McAneny, who jumped oft 4in (including a handicap of lin) made it a dose competition. Mr. (J. Gaukrodger, who judged tho horse events, passed tho remark that ho had not seen such lino performances and close competitions for many a long day. The smooth wat m which this portion of the programme went off was due, in a large measure, to the work of Mr. C. Parkinson, secretary of the horse events, while the meeting as a whole owes much of its success to the energetic labors of Mr. D. G. Beattie, secretary of the Sports Club, and bis willing and able body of assistants. Trophies vepL presented at the 'Lien in the Ormond hall last evening.
