CLOSER SETTLEMENT

ADVOCATED BY DAIRYMEN

SPECIAL ATTENTION TO POVERTY BAY URGED. STRONG SUPPORT AT DAIRY CO. MEETING. Emphatic affirmation of the principle of closer settlement, with especial reference to -Poverty Bay s needs in tins direction, was given by the 200 suppliers who attended the annual meeting of the Kia-Ora Co-operative Dairy Company yesterday. The matter was discussed at* .Slime length,' though there were no dissenting views expressed, and a motion in this direction was carried unanimously amid a sc-ene of greatenthusiasm. In bringing forward the motion, Air. AY. AlcCullough pointed out that there were many large areas of land in Poverty Ba v which, at the present time, were carrying about “one shepherd and n lame dog.’’ Alttch of this land was Hat and eminently suited to closer settlement. Should it be cut up into small holdings, a great many more people than atpresent would be enabled to make a living from it, while the full .benefit of tiie land would he obtained, with considerably augmented revenue for the Government. Air. McCullough then moved as follows: “That this meeting cf shareholders, who are dairyi'armer s in the Poverty Bay district and represent 890 suppliers, hereby aliirm the principle of closer settlementthroughout New Zealand and particularly m this district of Poverty Bay where large areas of suitable land lor dairying are hold by large land-owners and such land is not* being worked and made re-venue-earning to the same extent as would be the case if such land was cut up for closer settlement.' The. motion was seconded and, after discussion, carried unanimously, if also being decided to forward copies of the resolution to the Prime Minister and the Alinister for Ronds.
