MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING

Tlio monthly meeting of the Waikohu County Council was held at Te Karaka yesterday, the chairman, Cr. A. A. Eraser, presiding- There were-also present: Os. H. H. Docks, M. Doyle, O. Gaukrodger, G. Tl. Mor-ico. and H. J. E. Tomhlespn. Mr William Thomas, "Matawai applied for renewal of his slaughterhouse license.—Granted. The town clerk, Gisborne, wrote asking the council to appoint delegates to attend a conference of local bodies to discuss the acquisition or a site for an aerodrome.—Mr. Morico was appointed delegate to the conference: The town clerk, Gisborne, . also wrote asking the council to support a resolution of the Borough Council requesting the Cook Hospital Board to delay passing its expenditure until the contributing local bodies had had an opportunity of scrutinising it.—lt ws decided to support the resolution. Comment was made that the expenditure in. connection with the Gisborne hospital was proportionately higher than at any other hospital in the Dominion. ' The Poverty Bay Power Board advised that the Here lino was a guaranteed line, and it would therefore he necessary for tlio council to enter into a guarantee of £lO per annum before the surfaceman’s cottage could he connected up.—it was decided that the council could not enter into the guarantee. The Gisborne Chamber of Commerce advised that Air T. R- Toovey, assistant general manager of the Port of London Authority,'would deliver an address at the Majestic Theatre on .Monday, June 17, and extended an invitation to the chairman and councillors to attend.—The invitation, was accepted. The Commissioner of Transport forwarded additional regulations dealing with the erection of compulsory stop signs.—Received. The District Engineer advised that ho had forwarded to head, office the council’s request, m reference to charging against the grant the payment ol : compensation for land taken, and lyul received a reply to the effect that it could not be entertain-ed.-—The matter was left iii the bands of the member for the riding. The District Engineer wrote asking the council to have certain deviations on the Matafrai-Hangaroa road legalised, and to undertake the formation of the road southwardsfrom’ the 2 mile 76 chain peg to the junction with the AYharekopne-Tah-ora road.—Cr. Alorice was requested to interview, the District Engineer in reference to the matter. Arrangements were -made for maintenance work to be done as required on Kalkner’s road, and for the fencing of Armstrong road. The question of access to AIJ Rayley's property was left in the hands of Cr. Gaukrodger. A resolution was passed that, the building by-laws should he mure strictly enforced, j On the motion of the chairman, it was resolved to allow the usual rebate of per cent, for the payment of rates.

Leave of absence was granted to the engineer. Mr. A. G. Lucas, to visit Auckland on urgent private business.

Accounts passed for payment amounted to £3873 6s sd.

ENGINEER’S REPORT

Reporting on the work clone during the month ended Alay 31, the engineer (Air A. G. Lucas) stated:— "Alotu Biding.-—'l he surfaceman has been engaged patching on the main road between Alotuhora and Alatawai, and has put in some culverts. 'The contractor for metalling on the main highway between Raukauroa and Alatawai has about 60 chains to complete flip contract. The 'grader men are at work clearing slips on the new piece of the RakauroaTaliora road and cleaning. watertables on the T P \Yera section. The gang on tlio Afoanui road is doing good work and a ear can now get into the homesteads of Air. Rutledge and Air. Hope. Most of the slips in this riding have been cleared. Alainteiiance work has been carried out as usual.

“Waihuka Riding.—Tlio main road on the deviation is again open for traffic, although the large slip is still giving trouble. The surfaceman and two extra men are engaged clearing slips from the deviation to Otoko. The road has dropped slightly in two places near Otoko. The fords have been filled in with metal and ar e , now in fair condition. Teams are engaged cleaning the watertables and slips on the Otoko hill. Extra men were put on the front road to assist the surfacemen. Tip. usual maintenance work was attended to.

“Alangatu Riding.—Maintenance work only ‘has been earned out in tins riding. “Waipaoa Riding.—The Armstrong road suffered severely during the recent rains and several places became very boggy. Watertables are being attended io on the Puha-TYhatatutu mad. Owing to the fioodr*' it is very liard to get good metal near AYliatntutu. Maintenance work has been carried out as usual.

“Ngatapa Riding.—The spawling of the two pieces beyml Rore has been cmpleted, but it is inadvisable to roll the top piece as the subsoil is too wet. Several pieces at • the bluff oiv O’Brien’s section require to be taken further back to correspond with the plans and specifications. Alost of the slips have been cleared, extra men having to he put on. Instructions have, been given to have the piece of road at .the Tangihau turn-off me-tniled if the weather permits.

“Kanakanaia riding.—Maintenance work lias been attended to as usual In this riding.

Patching has been done on the whole length of th e highway in this riding. The grader has been engaged on Lavenhnm road and the main road taking sides off and bringing in metal-where required. Contracts will be let for metalling on the Kaitera-tahi-Te Karaka and Lavenhnm roods.”
