GERMAN .CONSUL’S ATTITUDE

With .regard to the Press Association message from Auckland stating that a meeting at Auok'aml, convened .by. Mr. K. ■ Langgtuh, iormerly Austrian Consul, had carried a resolution that the German Consul for New Zealand should he asked to withdraw his request that no c-vic reception be given in Auckland to tho officers of the German cruiser Erriclen, the German Consul (Mr. \Y. Ronseler) states: •‘Possibly Mr. Langguth’s action is based on a misconception, because my act on was not a request to cancel an existing arrangement, but a suggestion to abandon, if deemed advisable, a reported proposal for an arrangement. ’ The German Consul has received Hie following telegram from Auckland: “At'a very representative general public meeting held last light, the opinion was strrtngly voiced, and a resolution was passed unanimously, that a civic reception in Auckland should hr- insisted upon. 1 have been instructed to ask you to rescind jour decision in ibis connection and to ask you to wire me whether von will officially support our deputation, asking the Mayor of Auckland lor a civic reception.'’ To this, Mr. Denseler replied as follows: ’“Received your telegram this evening. Please understand that mj action was not a request to flit Mayor of Auckland to cancel 'an existing arrangement for a c vie reception, but a suggestion, il deemed advisable. to abandon a reported proposal for such an arrangement. Existing conditions fully justified my action. f have no right to insist oliieiallv upon the Mayor granting a civic reception, which function exceeds the usual courtesies. 'I o beg tor favors would be undignified. My altitude is approved. Please desist agitation and do not spoil our good cause The just sense ol New Zealand will assert' itself against unfriendly or vacillating attitude* ”
