EAST COAST MYSTERY

FLOATING TAR

(Special to the Times.) OPOTIKI. June 11

There is considerable mystery concerning tiio fact that large Quantities of tar have Iveeii washed upon the East’ Coast between Oreti Point and To Kaha. T A launch which visited \v bite Island reports that Quantities of tar ha vo also been washed ashore there. Owing to the fact that the tar has been brought ashore over sneli a large area, it is thought, that some vessel must have l*eori In distress, and the tar put overboard, or that a vessel lias foundered. The fact, that the tar has been found at White Island would tend to show that the vessel must have been crossing the hay to the North of tho island.

There is no report here of any vessel having been in distress or of having jettisoned any cargo.
