Tlie site of tlie ancient city of Jericho is to he submitted to a thorough archaeological excavation. The work will be under the direction of Professor John Garstang. The expense of the new expedition is being shared by Lord Melchett and Sir C. Mnrston. The results (says the London Daily Telegraph) will be awaited with the liveliest expectation by all Biblical scholars, since it is hoped to throw light on the much-disputed question of the date of the exodus of the Israelites and their entry into Canaan. .Jericho was destroyed, according to the B.ible narrative, bv Joshua during or at the close of the loth century B.C. The.site of Jericho was excavated 20 tears ago 'by Dr. Schumacher and Professor Seibn. The conclusion drawn bv the German excavators was that Jericho 101 l before an invasion from the oast, and had been destroyed some centuries before Joshua attacked the city. Dr. Garsang does not accept that theory. Influenza though happily m a minor form, is at present in evidence in Gisborne, and with tlie usual winter colds, many 1 affected.
