SALVATION ARMY SERVES FREE MEALS

OVER SO MEN ON OPENING DAY

AUCKLAND, June Kb “The first square meal I’ve had for days”, said one of Auckland’s unemployed in the Salvation Army workmen’s homo to-day, after ho bad finished a solid repast, of soup, meat and vegetables. “It’s hard to be out of work”, he added, “hut it’s harder still to he hungry. I can tell you it puts a new heart, into a. man to get a good meal in the middle of the day.”

The Army’s scheme for serving; free dinners to deserving unemployed was inaugurated to-day. Over 50 unemployed had a. substantial mean and the number to-morrow will doubtless be considerably higher. The meals, are to he given throughout tho -winter.

“'flic great maionty are genuine eases”, said Staff Captain T. FHobnes. “There are, 'Some who try to impose on charity, but m.v experience is that they are a very small minority. In any ease, a man who has had a good meal is less likely to get into mischief than one who is hungry and desperate. Most of the men unemployed are unskilled laborers, hut there is a. fairly large percentage of tradesmen and skilled workers. Whenever possible work is found for them.
