SCHOOL UOMMITEE .MEETING
(Special to tho Times.) The annual, meeting of householder„s was held on Monday, Mr. W. Burrett presiding over 1 a good attendance. The old* committee Jiad been re-elected without opposition. The annual report stated that the buildings have been kept in good repair, although it was getting, difficult to keep some of the main building (which is 50 years old) in good condition. Additional accommodation had been provided by the adding of another room to the infant department. The school grounds were in good order and reflected great credit on the. teachers for the interest they have taken in them. The, necessity of an increased playing area was becoming more evident every day, and ell oris were being made to secure possession of thg police paddock adjoining the school. The. establishment of a commercial course in connection with Ida*, secondary department was in course of negotiation. The secondary department continued to give'good results. One junior and one senior scholarship were gained, nine pupils were awarded senior free places, five qualified for P.S.E., and lour passed the matriculation exam. In addition, 1 live senior pupils were successful in the teachers’ examinations. The inspector had 'reported that a keen school spirit had been cultivated, while the order and discipline were described as very good. r lhe secondary school, maintained its prestige, in the athletic field, easily retaining lffi> Bav of Plenty High School Shield m competition with W hakatane, To Puke and Taurnngn High School. Mr. Potts continued Ids interest i-> encouraging the study of native flora, his prize- this year being won by Miss Lelin Clark. The headmaster (Mr. Burton) had regularly attended the meetings of the committee, and his assistance had been much appreciated. I lie adoption of the report and balance-sheet was moved by Mr. J. P. Sinclair, who referred in complimentary terms to the work of the committee.
The motion was seconded by Rev. 1). Hird, and carried. A motion was carried urging on the Director of Education the necessity ol securing the police* paddock as an extra playing area. The question of a technical school was touched on by Mrs. .J. 0. .Murray, who urged the need of one.— The chairman said a deputation had waited on the Director of Education, who had promised to do Ids best in the corning year to provide for the establishment of a technical .school at Opotiki. A vote of appreciation of the good work of the committee and school staff during the year was passed with acclamation. /
