Cobbe, in congratulating the promotors on encouraging interest in agriculture, said that, for the last year, ending March, our exports totalled £57,154,343, Of which £53,417,328 came off the land. Recently, he had visited some of the principal factories in the Dominion. In complimenting manufacturers on thei r excellent products, he pointed out that the market was only a local one’; they must self their manufactures within New Zealand. Therefore, their progress and success must depend on the prosperity of tho farmers.

Th e most troublesome problem today was unemployment. Relief work was only a temporary expedient; the real remedy was to be reached only through the avenue of land settlement. The intensive farming of small areas was such a remedy but it required careful consideration before its adoption. Those who were encouraging young people to take a real interest in farming were doing a valuable work in helping the unemployment problem.
