ABOUT £9,000,000 LYINC IDLE ' IN BANKS '
HON. A. J. STALLWORTHY'S WARN INC MANY CITIZENS NOT HELPINC TOWARDS PROSPERITY HAVE RESPONSIBILITY TO DOMINION (Press Association.) ' AUCKLAND, April 24. Speaking at the Mt: Eden Cham* her of Commerce, th e Hon. A. j. Stallworthy said unemployment was a matter ,in whibh all. Should cooperate. There was virtually £9,000,* 000 idle in the banks- which made it clear, that many citizens were not pulling their weight in an effort to get back to general prosperity. A go-slow or‘strike policy on the part of capital could be .just as pernicious as other policies.
The Government did not want to interfere with legitimate private enterprise, but there was a responsibility on private capital to get the Dominion out of its present difficulties. Although the recovery was slow, the Government was doing its utmost to improve the position. Immigration had been stopped for the time being. Over £2,000,0000 had been liberated to give’ the country new confidence, and an active public works policy was being pursued. It was fair to assume that had there not been a radical change of policy by the Gov e rnment the unemployed position would have been very much worse than it was to-day. There was (returning a spirit of optimism, based on the progressive and liberal policy.
