A BESIEGED TOWN
BASLE PREPARED POP THE
REDS. TROOPS IN READINESS. United Press Assn, by El. Tel. Copyright (United Service.) GENEVA. .March 21. Since Saturday, Basle has resembled a besieged town. All the surrounding villages hold troops, including three battalions of infantry, cavalry, frontier guards, and motor lorries ready to march into the town if the Communists hold prohibited demon.strai urns. The principal buildings, telegraph and telephone oflices, and consulates, are guarded by 1 soldiers and police. Armed police occupy the railway stations. All pensous seeking to enter Basle are examined, and all suspects are forced: back or arrested. The police'’ raided the office of the Communist new spa per. Vorwaerts. destroyed the type, confiscated an edition and placed a guard over the building. Several well-known Communist leaders wore arrested at Geneva, Lausanne, and Berne, when entraining for Basle, and were imprisoned. Army pioneers, armed with ipiiekiiring gun 4, strongly guard the tierman frontier. An important group of German Communists from Leorracli were driven back. The army commandeered the Basle radio station for military purposes. The Federal Government is sitting at a continuous session at Berne to deal with emergencies.
